PhotoReading at 59% Off

Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'TranslatorService.LanguageService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.
I recently made arrangements with Learning Strategies to reintroduce the 59% discount for PhotoReading. The last time they offered this discount was a few years ago, so they don’t do this often.
The discount will run for 30 days only, through October 15, 2010. This will save you about $300 if you get the Deluxe program, which is the version I have.
I also added ?a couple videos to the PhotoReading page. The first video shows some people talking about their experiences with PhotoReading, and the second one shows a news anchorman going through the process and reporting on his experiences with it.
Since I wrote the original review of PhotoReading, I’ve also had the opportunity to meet Paul Scheele, who created the program. He knows a great deal about accelerated learning and is very passionate about transforming the education system with whole-brain learning methods.
It was a little surreal talking to Paul in person because I’m so used to hearing his voice on audio programs… almost a dream-like experience. :)
PhotoReading on a computer (like with a PDF) is easy. It works just as well for electronic documents as for print books — actually better in my opinion.
I have an Kindle device for reading e-books, but I’ve never been able to PhotoRead with it. The Kindle’s electronic ink technology makes the page turning too slow for PhotoReading to be practical. I can do some of the PhotoReading steps but not all of them. I suspect the same problem will occur with other devices that use e-ink technology because it can’t refresh the pages fast enough. Technically you can still do it, but I find the experience frustrating. Another drawback to the Kindle is that you can’t scroll or zoom; it’s a one-page-at-a-time device.
For similar reasons I wouldn’t try PhotoReading on a smart phone. The screen is too small, so you can’t take in much text at a time.
Last month, I got an iPad, and since it has an LCD screen, the page turning is very quick. Consequently, it’s easy to PhotoRead with it.
I know the iPad is more expensive than a Kindle (and much more versatile), so it’s not just an e-book reader. I simply want to point out that some devices lend themselves better to PhotoReading than others. The main issue is how quickly you can turn the pages and how much text is visible on each screen. The iPad has a decent screen size, so it can show a lot of text at once, and the page turning is speedy and responsive.
I think it’s actually easier to PhotoRead on an iPad than with a regular book since the page turning doesn’t require as much dexterity. You never have to worry about your fingers slipping if you try to turn the pages too quickly. You just tap, tap, tap in the margin to keep turning the pages.
See my?PhotoReading review for the details. PhotoReading makes an especially nice holiday gift if you know someone who could benefit from accelerated learning techniques.

Pacific Northwest Road Trip

Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'TranslatorService.LanguageService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.
Rachelle and I are planning a 3-week road trip to the Pacific Northwest (USA and Canada). We’ll be leaving from Las Vegas sometime next week.
We’ll begin by driving north to Reno, then west through Sacramento to San Francisco, north to Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver, and east to Calgary.?Rachelle will be doing her play in Calgary on October 8th (one performance only), after which she’ll return to Winnipeg for another show. Then I’ll return solo to Vegas, visiting Salt Lake City on the way home.
We’ll probably stay in downtown Reno for one night only, then head to San Francisco the next day. We might stop in Sacramento for a meal along the way, but I don’t expect we’ll stay the night there.?I’d like to spend a few days each in the Bay Area, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver.
Our only significant constraint is that we have to be in Calgary by October 7th at the latest. Otherwise we have some flexibility in how we do the trip.
I’ve never done an extended road trip before, nor has Rachelle. This is something we both wanted to do for the experience. The timing works well for our schedules, and the weather should be nice at this time of year.
My car has only 5500 miles on it, so this trip will add a few thousand more.
I’ve been to Reno once before, and I’ve been to the Bay Area many times, including living there from 1989 to 1991, so I know some cool things to do in those cities. But this will be my first time ever visiting Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, Calgary, and Salt Lake City, so I’d love some suggestions on what to go/see/do in those cities, including where to stay and potentially interesting stops along the way. We have a place to stay in Calgary, but we still need to make arrangements for the rest of the trip.
I’m not planning to travel-blog about the trip. I tried doing that for my 3-week Canada trip earlier this year, but I found it tedious and uninspired, and the feedback was a bit ho-hum too, so I don’t see much value in doing that again. I may still blog along the way if I feel inspired to write, but I’d rather blog about personal growth topics and use trip stories to illustrate points only if it seems to fit. Otherwise I prefer to focus on experiencing the trip as opposed to documenting it.
Have you ever gone on a road trip? If so, what advice would you have for us? Did you enjoy the experience?

Steve Pavlina Facebook Fan Page

Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'TranslatorService.LanguageService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.
By popular request (i.e. constant nagging for the past year), I finally created a Steve Pavlina Facebook fan page. If you have a Facebook account, please feel free to friend me there by clicking the “Like” button on that page. :)
My regular personal Facebook page has been maxed out at 5,000 friends for more than a year, so I’ve been stuck with an ever-growing queue of hundreds of friend requests I can’t approve. I’ve only been able to add new Facebook friends as people drop off, but the waiting list always grows faster. I’m also unable to add new friends of my own choosing. Even when I drop down to 4980 friends or so, Facebook says I’m still too close to the limit to let me send out any new friend requests.
The nice thing about fan pages is that they provide essentially the same functionality as a regular Facebook page, but as far as I can tell, there’s no limit on the number of connections you can have. The best part for me is that I don’t need to manually approve requests to follow a fan page — as you might imagine, doing that for a page with thousands of requests can get a bit tedious.
I just put the Facebook fan page up within the past hour, and dozens of people have already connected to it. I suspect it will eventually overtake my personal Facebook page in terms of the number of connections.
I’m not sure what to do differently with the fan page vs. the personal one, so for now I’ll probably clone the status updates on both. In the long run, I’ll probably pay more attention to the fan page as the number of connections grows, using it as a place to stimulate discussion and feedback on a variety of ideas.
I’ve been into online social networking since 1994, so I’ve been very active on Facebook and Twitter. If you’ve seen my personal Facebook page, you’ll know that it’s quite lively.
The catalyst that finally pushed me over the edge to create a fan page was reading the book The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company That Is Connecting the World by David Kirkpatrick. This is a fascinating read if you care to learn about the history of Facebook. I purchased and read it on my iPad.

Why I Love Self-Help Books

Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'TranslatorService.LanguageService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.

Wow! Lot's of people sure do hate self-help books. One of my former coworkers had a mini-tirade when she saw a self-help book on top of the New York Times Bestsellers List. According to her, those kinds of books don't deserve national attention. And another friend of mine never hesitates to tell me how useless self-help books are. According to him, self-help books are only beneficial to the people who get rich writing them.
What's wrong with helping someone solve a problem that's obviously causing emotional or physical pain? Everyone needs help every once in awhile, and it's not always possible to speak with a person. And even if there is someone to talk to, that doesn't mean they can help. When you're surrounded by negativity and people who can't even begin to give you advice, then self-help books are useful.
I'm not ashamed to admit that self-help books have helped me tremendously. The Power of Positive Thinking, by Norman Vincent Peale, encouraged me to venture away from small town life to explore life in New York City. Beauty for Ashes, by Joyce Meyer, taught me to overcome emotional baggage collected from years of verbal abuse. These are only two examples out of many. These books provided the guidance and information I needed to make positive changes in my life.
People who say self-help books don't work miss one very important fact: No one can help a person who refuses to be helped. A person can read hundreds of books on overcoming child abuse, but that doesn't mean anything will change. The books aren't junk just because the reader doesn't change overnight. Adjusting thought and behavior patterns takes time. It's not as easy as switching to a different television show.
I'm not naïve. A number of self-help books are junk. It's true that you can't believe everything you read. The advice may be useless, unrealistic, or just plain bad. There's good and bad in any industry. And there's always someone waiting to cash in on a trend. However, that's no reason to trash an entire industry because of a few con artists.
Another criticism I hear often is that self-help books are for stupid people who need common sense in a book. That's ridiculous. There are things that require much more than common-sense knowledge. If you're an alcoholic who wants to quite drinking, common sense says just stop drinking. But does anyone honestly believe it's that easy? A self-help book could be the first step towards sobriety.
I think the world would be a better place if more people read self-help books. I'm not suggesting we become self-help book addicts, and spend more time reading than living our lives. What I'm saying is that personal-growth is beautiful, and can make life better for everyone. No one is harmed if a self-help book provides the help a person needs. And if you would laugh at a person for trying to better themselves, then maybe you need to read a few a self-help books as well.

Self-Help Strategies For Building Self-Esteem

Depressed feelings are triggered when maltreated or by individual self-assessment. Self-help for building self-esteem is highly recommended for people suffering with low self-esteem as it creates depression, anxiety, phobia and also leads to mental illness in extreme cases.
The need for self-help becomes inevitable as such traumatized people cannot enjoy work or life and fail to attain any personal goal. This makes them think negatively. However, prior to considering the strategies and actions involved in raising self-esteem, it becomes essential to recognize the valid reasons behind depression. This recognition of reasons helps in undergoing physical treatment and doing worthwhile activities and in self-development.
Self-help for building self-esteem includes strategies such as eating healthily, performing plenty of exercises, watching fun movies, spending valuable time with friends, practicing or reading hobbies of choice. Raising self-esteem is easily done by paying best attention to the wants and needs of their own body, heart and mind. It entails taking appropriate care and this depends on having healthy food consisting of five to six helpings of fruits, vegetables, cereals, grains and also non-vegetarian food of two servings including meat and chicken. Self-help procedure focuses on body movements and regular exercises. Doing outdoor exercises and scheduling time for exercises is very important.
Self-help for building self-esteem is the right way of coming out of a withdrawn shell. It is the best as one can come out of a trauma only when they desire for it. Certain things that include actions and have some strategies are riding, playing games, walking, climbing staircase several times and definitely listening to good music. Self-help for building self-esteem can be ensured by learning new things such as actively participating in fun activities. Such actions display positive results over a period of time. It also needs the support of confidence and this can be increased by focusing in the abilities and talents, as this helps a person in recognizing their own value and builds self-confidence.
Investing in purchasing good clothes and dressing well certainly has a great impact on people suffering with weak self-esteem. Compatible friends who are energetic and lively keep the depressed people happy. Self-help for building self-esteem meant that such people should be occupied continuously. Even simple actions such as making the living space attractive create a feeling of well-being. Displaying personal achievements augments the self-confidence that is essential to increase from the low self-esteem. Self-help behavior should bring out every action of their creativity in open and this may include even making meals or discussing pleasant topics or also creating a good ambiance.
Self-help for building self-esteem is a tricky path as you have to steer and lead towards improvement on your own. This can be best done by diverting towards learning new skill sets as it boosts the levels of confidence in a person. Initiating with small things that does not demand much of their activity gives them a comfortable feel and working on a diet plan is also a must.
Self-help for building self-esteem is best basically when self-appearance is improved, as it depends on the self-confidence. Smiling, volunteering for simple tasks and speaking few words kindly will certainly build self-confidence when such actions are done consistently. The changes get incorporated and allow rejuvenating making life more enjoyable.

Self-Esteem Self-Help Programmes

Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'TranslatorService.LanguageService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.

There are still not that many self-help programmes for self-esteem on the market, but fortunately, awareness about self-esteem is increasing and the number of self-esteem self-help programmes are increasing too. In order to help you to decide which programme to choose I will write about some different aspects that can be good to keep in mind when you are looking for a self-esteem self-help programme.
First of all, you need to be aware of what it is that you want to get out of the self-esteem home study course or self-esteem distance course. Do you want to know why your self-esteem has become as it is today? Do you want learn practical self-esteem exercises? Do you prefer writing exercises? Do you want to learn about the different aspects of your self-esteem and about which aspect that is most beneficial for you to focus on? Once you know exactly what it is that you want to get out of the self-help programme you can start to evaluate whether the specific programme that you are looking at will fulfil your wishes. Some programmes, such as those in the "Self-Esteem Toolkit"-series that I have created, provide a mixture of all of these things. Compare the programmes to make sure that you get the mixture that you want.
You also need to decide in which way you would like to learn? For example, if you like learning from videos, my 10 week distance course in self-esteem would be good. If you like doing pen and paper exercises, then one of the Self-Esteem Toolkits would be better. Also, do you want your programme to include personal one-to-one support or do you want to do it all anonymously on your own?
Different self-esteem programmes are created for different lifestyles. For example, when I created my self-esteem programmes, I made sure to include one "for busy people". This "self-esteem toolkit " mostly contains audio files that can be listened to on your way to work, while you're working out in the gym, while you're cooking etc. It also contains portable objects that you can keep in your pocket and use whenever you have a spare moment. If you are working at home or have plenty of time, you may want to choose another programme in which you will get more physical papers to read or other materials that you cannot bring with you so easily.
Finally, different self-esteem programmes are suitable for different people. There is not one self-esteem self-help programme that is best for all. One size doesn't fit all - not when it comes to raising your self-esteem. Some of my self-esteem coaching clients love raising their self-esteem through interacting with others in group coaching sessions. Others prefer personal coaching. Some people want to do it entirely on their own. They buy the book The Self-Esteem Toolbox, the Self-Esteem Game, or one of the Self-Esteem Toolkit home study packages. To get want you need you have to figure out which is the best method for you.

Why Aren't You Using the Secrets of Self Help to Be Happy?

Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'TranslatorService.LanguageService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.

Now that you are reading this article, chances are, you are looking for tips and self help to be happy in your life. In today's hectic world, there are many people who are stressed out so this is not unusual. The real object of human existence is after all to be happy. In fact, this is why we want more money, more quality time, more comfort and so on. As the Dalai Lama said "The purpose of life is to BE HAPPY".
Because the sad part is that there are many people who do have more money, more quality time and more comfort but still feel unhappy.
One of the biggest information searches is for free self help ebooks and personal development articles to help people to be happy.
There is many a free self help ebook online. The key is to find something that feels right for you at the time of your search. There are self help books that were written many years ago by authors of a different era, some were written about a decade ago and some, only a few years ago. The self help books of long ago may be interesting, but these are cumbersome in the fact that the English used is more complex than what we are used to now.
Getting the self help to be happier in life should be simple and straight forward. Like C. Kingsley said "We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us really HAPPY is something to be ENTHUSIASTIC about."
I have found a self help website created by Helene Malmsio that has around 200 free self help books in many subjects to suit the various areas of your life that needs some self improvement. It is unusual, as this site doesn't need you to register or pay membership fees, or even to subscribe to a newsletter, to be able to download as many self help ebooks as you want. Some sites actually require you to be a registered member in order for you to use its online self help features which you can access through the links on the site, or through an interface.
The following is an excerpt from the site to help you better manage your emotions:

You might look at the following strategy and think "Oh No! Not more of this simplistic - quick fix - nonsense". Please don't discard this powerful concept just because it is so SIMPLE. Simple doesn't always mean EASY. You have to apply yourself - consistently - with a genuine desire to improve your emotional wellbeing, THEN you will get powerful results.
Go on - Try this straightforward self help exercise - answer the questions and notice how you feel when you think about the answers......
"What am I most enjoying in my life right now?" (as Tony Robbins says, don't say "Nothing!" Instead ask yourself "If I could be enjoying something in my life right now, what would that be?")
Then ask yourself: "What about that do I enjoy?"
Then ask yourself: "How does that make me feel?"
Then next ask yourself: "What am I most happy about in my life right now?"
Then ask yourself: "What about that makes me feel happy?"
Notice how your emotions react to the experience of dwelling or thinking about the good and sweet things in your life. If you like the feeling and want more of it, just keep asking yourself the right questions.

When you start each day asking yourself questions that generate a feeling of pleasure, excitement, enthusiasm, just by the act of answering them, your day gets off on the right path.
Try designing self help questions that suit your life or interests, maybe straightforward ones like
* What am I excited about in my life now?

* What am I grateful about in my life now?

* What am I most looking forward to in my life today?
You don't have to be a rocket scientist to apply this self help strategy, do you? All you need is the DESIRE to improve your day and then make the commitment to actually APPLY it every morning for at least 30 days. It will work.
Any self help tool, no matter how powerful, only works when you work it.

So what is stopping you from using the secrets of self help to be happy? To quote Abraham Lincoln "Most people are about as happy as they make up their mind to be."
Again, the key is to look for places that give you plenty of online free resources and tips on self help to be happy. Then remember, you need the commitment to becoming happier by implementing the tools and technology that you learn from them.

The Best Self Help Books - What to Look For When Choosing Self Help Books

Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'TranslatorService.LanguageService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.

You're probably bemused by the number of self-help books in the bookstores, and in fact the personal involvement in choosing and reading self-help books can be a therapeutic exercise in itself, but there are so many authors each with their own approach to the subject and a variety of self-improvement methods which can make self-help subject matter confusing for anyone with limited knowledge of the self-help genre.
It depends on the style of the author as to whether they will have a beneficial effect on the reader. The Positive-thinking books by Norman Vincent Peal were the first of the self-help titles, and since 'The Power Of Positive Thinking' (1952) and since then there have been many derivations which have certainly helped a lot of people to direct their lives positively.
Self-help books cover a variety of areas including:
* Addiction

* Low self esteem

* Divorce

* Self confidence

* Raising Spiritual awareness
Stress and depression can be caused by anxiety over mundane things and self-help books can be useful for putting things in perspective. By reading a self-help book, your attention will be directed towards the solution to your problem which in itself can help you to rationalize a solution for yourself. The key is to find an author with whom you empathize and although this is a very personal choice it will also be the most rewarding.
Solution may be generic, each has their way of putting over the best way of approaching the problem and this means there are considered experts in the different sectors of self-help and readers find the ones they empathize with as being most helpful. The most certain way to find useful self-help books is to research the various authors and maybe sample some of their writings to see if you empathize with their style.
Psychological techniques used to help achieve improvement in performance, both physical and mental include NLP(Neuro Linguistic Programming), EFT(Emotional Freedom Technique, or 'tapping') and Energy Psychology and there are many self-help books with information on how these can be learned and applied at home,
Other examples of freely available psychological tools that can be learned on your own with self-help books include
* learning to develop intuition and psychic senses

* learning to dowse with a pendulum,

* learning muscle testing,

* learning different methods of chakra clearing,

* learning to use crystals to cure ailments
A common practice related to most of these techniques is visualization, which in conjunction with deep relaxation can be extremely powerful. This is the basis of the Law of Attraction which defines that what you consistently think about is what you attract in life. If you do visualizations about what you really want in your life and reproduce the emotions related to the experience, your vibration will be raised to the level required to attract the circumstances.
To enable you to do this you have to be in the mood to produce these feelings and this is where you have to work on your emotional state. To help to get to a relaxed and receptive Alpha state, there are various frequency recordings and hypnotic therapies on the market such as the range provided by the Unexplainable Store which can help you to find the correct frequency to attune your brain enabling you to achieve success in many areas thought to be unattainable.
The following are all excellent authors in their field but as they vary in style quite considerably you may well find that you prefer the approach of one of them more than others
- Deepak Chopra - Spirituality and Synchronicity and applied universal laws.

- Wayne Dyer - Practical approach to manifesting and raising self-awareness.

- Anthony Robbins - Direct approach to self-empowerment.

- Tolle Eckhart - Spiritual approach to the self-awareness and living in the now.

- Barefoot Doctor - Tao approach using meditation, raising natural energy and manifesting through visualization.

The Role of Brain Fitness in Self Help Programs

Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'TranslatorService.LanguageService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.

Do a search on the internet for self help programs and prepare to be amazed. I am a self help guy from way back too, and I am amazed at all that is available for purchase.
You can find a self help site for anything, I think, which is a tribute to both American ingenuity and marketing.
We seem to be adept at finding a problem and creating a program to solve it.
The problem with some of our self help programs is that sometimes they are very light weight, implying that a solution is very easily achieved in the very short term.
When I think of self help, I think of Alcoholics Anonymous, or Narcotics Anonymous, or Cocaine Anonymous, or I think of the market for weight loss, or divorce or marriage or relationship aids, anger management, or an emerging market in regards to brain fitness.
All of those programs involve regular practice of certain behaviors, and there are three behaviors we humans can hope to manage or control, our thinking, our feelings, and our behaviors, or how our body moves.
If you have read Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi's book FLOW, which is treatise on the psychology of optimal performance, then you know that we process sound, visual, touch, smell, and taste information at the rate of seven bits of data every 1/18th second, so self help programs need to be learned and implemented in a very short period of time. (1/18th second is twice as fast as I can blink my eyes).
Self help then must be a process of awareness and management of sensory processing done very quickly and very frequently.
I liken the process for my anger management clients to steering a car, you make thousands of small adjustments to the position of the vehicle on the road, and are paying attention to hundreds of variables at a given moment, traffic in front, behind, traffic lights, children, the policeman six blocks ahead, ect. As you do this, you keep the vehicle going in the direction you want, at the speed you want, in a safe way for yourself and other drivers. You avoid potholes.
So the process of self help must be similar, and involves first your awareness and attention and perception which can only happen in your incredibly fast brain.
Can you imagine paying attention to your attention?
Put it another way, awareness gives me choice.
So self help programs at their most basic are going to give me the ability to choose a new thought, which will lead to a new feeling, which may motivate a different behavior, and this is all going to happen thousands of times per minute in my very fast brain, just like I make many small adjustments to the steering wheel of my vehicle.
Remember that neurons can only do a couple of things, move electrical energy and neurotransmitters, which leads to all my choices, including a very basic cognitive behavioral tool/rule.
Change the thought to change the feeling.
Any self help program is going to give me new thoughts to think about this certain issue.
I need to practice this thought to make them a habit, so the new habit is stonger than the neural habit previously established (think codependent behaviors, for example) and then the new thought can be recalled in an 1/18th second in an emergency, and by that I mean that I recall my new thought to replace my problem thought very fast.
So self help as I am describing it begins with an awareness of how your brain sustains memory, and calls it up. It is very similar to the process you use to steer your car. Certain thoughts are a habit.
Change the thought to change the feeling, and the problem behavior does manifest, because I have changed the thought before my body could move.
So How Do I Increase my Awareness of My Thoughts?
Let me recommend some self help tools which have been very useful to me.
What makes self help the most effective is not effortful striving, but relaxation, believe it or not.
Stress hormones like adrenaline or cortisol were designed to help me prepare my flight of fight physiology for that 1/18th second when I perceived danger (happens in the brain!) and needed to run for my life, fight for life, or freeze to keep my life. When that physiology comes on line, I have only those three behavioral options. And every time my problem thought emerges, since it is now part of a pattern I am trying to change, I will create stress, which makes it harder for self-help to manifest.
Very hard to brainstorm solutions from the stress physiology, so calming down is the way to create self help program mastery.
Deep breathing for a period of time is the best and cheapest self help tool available for us humans, and if you are like most adults, you will nod your head in agreement and continue to breathe very shallow in your chest, which generates that pesky stress physiology.
So try the a heart rate variability program to learn how to contact the self help brain in your heart. What you will do is the first right thing for any self help program to be effective, which is relax, and not just in the moment, but on demand. Heart rate variability biofeedback is learned because it is a biofeedback process, and after a bit of practice your body will learn to stay much closer to this new baseline. A coherent heart rate will open higher perceptual centers in your brain where you will continue to think the thoughts associated with your new self help program, whether it be AA or your favorite weight loss program.
The Best Brain for Self Help
I am not aware of any self help creators out there that are taking a close look at how brain fitness impacts self help success.
We can now do a great deal to make our brains fit and healthier, which is where self help happens.
Not too long ago, no one knew how plastic our brains were and are, how my neurons are connecting and establishing those new habits.
(Neuroplasticity happens in minutes, not hours, days, weeks, or months).
If you want an excellent resource for brain fitness, then read Brainfit for Life by Simon Evans,Ph.D. and Paul Burghardt,Ph.D. who are neuroscientists at the University of Michigan.
They provide a huge amount of easy to digest information about how to get your brain fit for self help.
They discuss the 'pillars of brain fitness', physical exercise, nutrition, (incluiding omega 3 fatty acids) sleep, stress management, and challenging learning experiences including using computerized brain fitness programs.
The other aspect of brain fitness for selp help is neurogenesis, or the daily growth of new neurons if I do not have toxins like stress hormones or ethyl alcohol in my brain too frequently.
Novel learning experiences enhance neurogenesis and neuroplasticity.
Very useful brain fitness programs which I have used? Programs involving research about the dual n back task, or Michael Merzenich's neuroplasticity research are excellent.
Self help programs have been a huge part of my life, and I continue to try them out when I am convinced that there is some research to back them up.

What is the Best Self-Help Product on the Market?

Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'TranslatorService.LanguageService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.

As a writer and editor for an online self-help, personal-development and self-improvement superstore, I am frequently called upon to review the latest self-help products. Consequently, you'd think I would be perfectly positioned and eminently qualified to tell you which is the best self-help product.
You'd think. I mean, how hard can it be to pick out the best self-help product?
Well, it isn't as simple as that.
I can, without a moment's hesitation, tell you which is the top self-help DVD or top self-help book. That's a different matter. The top self-help product is the one which is currently out-selling all others. You can pop along to Amazon's self-help category and find out which is their best-selling product for yourself. But you don't want to know what the best-selling self-help product is. No, you want to know what the best self-help product is.
Now this next bit is going to sound a little glib, but bear with me.
The best self-help product is the one that works for you.
See, I told you the answer was going to sound a little glib.
Unfortunately, it's true. The best self-help product is the one which suits you, the one which you're comfortable with, the one that fits you like a glove. If we take this tailoring metaphor a step further: the only way to find the best self-help product for you, is to try each product on for size. Just as with clothing, you can't make your purchase on the basis of what someone else says. You have to give it a try first, check yourself out in the mirror in your mind's eye, so to speak. The only thing somebody else can tell you is what is the best self-help product for them, not what is the ideal product for you.
So, forgive me if I sound a little glib, but the best self-help product really is the one that works for you.
Go on, try a few on for size. When you've got the right product for you, you'll know.
It will just feel right.

Well first of all what do you know about your self esteem. Self esteem is nothing but an analysis that you do to yourself and if you are happy with your conclusions you are said to have a very high self esteem. But on the other case if you are not happy then you are said to have a very low self esteem. If you are already a person with so much self esteem you wouldn't want to check it and would be confident in the way you think. If you lack some self esteem then this is the right place to be in. you are having a guide who will talk about a few self-help to self esteem.
Self esteem issue can be solved pretty easily and within a few days practice you can be the one you were never before with respect to your self esteem. Having a low self esteem is anyways bad for you and the people around you. This will cloud the decisions you make. Why should we get things that far? So let's talk about some self-help to self esteem tips.
First all building confidence is what you have to do to start with building and as self-help to self esteem. Try to focus on the areas were you consider you are weak and work on it without considering you as some sort of a loser. No one ever comes to this world learning everything. Its practice and effort and the way you think that will affect self esteem. Second most important thing is never compare you with others. This will bring in lots of personal conflicts and put you down. So second point has to be strictly followed which is not to compare you with anyone else.
Third point is to stay occupied. Occupy yourself and do not let negative thoughts flow into you. Negativity can cause very low self esteem. So engage in various activities so that your mind won't wander around silly things that would make you go mad. And always think about the good things and forget the bad. Self-help to self esteem is the only way you can come out of it. Guides can guide you; take the pony till the river.
If you are thinking about from where to start then think about today. Something today that you can start with and analyze how far has this low self esteem saga affected you? Whatever you used to avoid with low self esteem refraining you from has to be started again. What makes you feel like you have low esteem is that you listen to others and not what your own voice has to say. It's high time to start listening to your own voice. You are correct, you can make decisions, you are not bad, you are doing a great job, you are happy with what you want so and so. Think only the positives. Let's not think about the others. Their life has got nothing to do with ours. Try these and keep reading; you will be inspired

What is Self-Help?

Self-help or self-improvement is when a person guides himself or herself intellectually, physiologically, physically and emotionally. There are a number of self-help movements and they each have their own techniques, processes and mechanisms that can help people. Many of these self-help movements also have their own gurus or leaders that are propagating their own brand of self help as well.
There are a number of publicly available forums and groups that are created by those that are seeking intervention and an end to their problems through the self-help mechanism. Self help groups have emerged in every field for those that are actively seeking the support. These fields include education, business, professional courses, medical support groups and many others. Some of the benefits that people see when they become part of the self-help forums include friendship, emotional support, a meaningful role in the forum and their life, a feeling of belonging and above all recognition for the work that they are doing.
There are self-help groups that are associated with the medical professionals as well. These groups will consist of those that give the care or are caretakers, the patient and the patient's family. When such help groups meet and share experiences, it can also be a knowledge base for those involved in the group. For many of the patients it can also become a learning experience of how other was able to combat the medical and emotional problems. While some may have cleared the obstacle, others may not be so lucky. The self-help group will actually help those that are unable to clear their problems or are suffering from emotional stress. These groups are also examples of those that give peer-to-peer support also.
For those in other spheres, self help means a constant upgrading of skills and abilities by analysing the previous problems. Many successful people are case studies for those that rely on self-help. The simple reason that they became successful is because they were able to overcome their problems and strived for doing better.
There is also a big market for self help in the US. It has been estimated that the self-help industry is worth almost $9 billion and this figure is for 2006. The self help industry that is being used by people more and more include holistic institutes, self help gurus and leaders, personal coaching market, stress management programs, motivational recordings on CDs seminars and many more.

In the era of growth and development, all nations try to uplift themselves to global standards in all areas. The key areas commonly identified by most economists are the social and economical transformation. The economic indicators are per capital income, gross domestic product, net domestic product, share in world trade, foreign exchange reserves etc. On the social side, drinking water, reliable electricity, good sanitary conditions, viable transport system etc, are given due importance. Millions of people in our country dream that India will become an economic super power in"2020".

It will be possible only by means of a balanced growth in all sectors. The pattern of growth prevailing at present is more in urban and metropolitan cities when compared to rural areas. This creates an economical imbalance in our social system.
Over the years poverty, unemployment and excess population are our important weakness. Among the above three, poverty and unemployment are directly correlated. Creating employment opportunities will curtail the poverty line. Previous studies with regard to people living below the poverty line clearly reveals that majority of them are living in rural areas. So concentrating on rural mass is the need of the hour.
After independence Government of India launched innumerable social and economical welfare programmes in spite of poverty and unemployment proliferates. Earlier programmes like Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP), Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA), Training of Rural Youth for Self-Employment (TRYSEM), Supply of Improved Toolkits to Rural Artisans (SITRA) and Ganga Kalyan Yojana (GKY) were conceived to be complementary to each other, for achieving the larger goal of poverty alleviation in the rural areas. Over the years, however, there was an erosion in the process of implementation of the programmes. These were conceived as integrated programmes with the objective of supplementing each other efforts to ensure energy. However each programme has been implemented as a separate and independent programme that focused more on the achievement of individual programme targets. The over all impact of the programmes in poverty alleviation, therefore was less than what was expected of them. The programmes were, therefore reviewed and the Swaranjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) was launched on April 1999as the single self-employment programmes in their place.
The SGSY is a holistic programme and the objective of SGSY is to bring the assisted poor families (Swarozgaris) above the poverty line. Under SGSY poor families are organized into Self-help groups (SHGs) through the process of social mobilization. SGSY ensures training and capacity building and provides income-generating assets through a mix of bank credit and Government subsidy. It is a credit linked scheme. Here, the credit plays a predominant role and subsidy is an enabling component.
Under this scheme, financial assistance may be given to individuals or groups (Self-help Groups) belonging to below poverty line families. However, the emphasis will be on the Group approach. The SGSY envisages developing activity clusters by selecting about 10 key activities per block. The programme is being implemented in rural areas of all the States / UTs (except Delhi and Chandigarh)1
The basic idea of "SHG" scheme is derived from International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). IFAD (1989) is quite similar to SHG programme, which was organised by an international social welfare agency. The head quarters of IFAD is situated in Rome. IFAD aimed at providing subsidized individual loans to people below poverty line for undertaking activities such as animal husbandry, horticulture, sericulture, khadi and handloom. Indian Bank played a key role in financing these schemes. The scheme was implemented in 75 unions of 8 districts on a selective basis. The IFAD project was successfully completed in the year 19982. Keeping in mind the positive results of this scheme, the state Governments in India wanted to continue this scheme. So a separate wing was setup under social welfare department for continuing this scheme. Now SHG is being used as a major weapon in poverty eradication.
The research had been carried out on the following objectives:

To study the origin, growth and development of Self-help groups

To understand the marketing of the Self-help groups products

To analyze the marketing problems of Self-help groups

To know the self-employment activities done by the Self-help groups
HISTORY OF SELF - HELP GROUPS

Self-help groups first emerged in MYRADA in 1985. In 1986 - 87 there were some three hundred SHGs in MYRADA's projects. Many had emerged from the breakdown of the large cooperatives organized by MYRADA. In these areas, a numbers of members asked MYRADA to revive the credit system. They usually came in groups of 15-20. When reminded of the loans they had taken out from the cooperative, they offered to return them to MYRADA, but not to the cooperative, which in their experience was dominated by a few individuals. MYRADA staff suggested that they return the money to themselves in other words the members who had come in a group to present their case to MYRADA. After some hesitation, they decided to continue meeting in these smaller groups. MYRADA staff realized that they would need training: how to organize a meeting, set an agenda keep minute, etc. Efforts were made to train the members systematically. On analysis it emerged that the members were linked together by a degree of affinity based on relationship of trust and support; they were also often homogeneous in terms of income or of occupation (for example, agricultural labourers), but not always. Caste and creed played a role, but in several groups affinity relationship and economic homogeneity were stronger; as a result, several groups included different castes and creeds. From the time that the first SHGs emerged in 1985 to the inclusion of the SHG strategy in the annual plan for 2000/01 (Government of India, 2000), several important steps were taken by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and leading NGOs, as well as by multilateral agencies, particularly IFAD. The SHG strategy is an important component of the Government's overall thrust to mitigate poverty and has been included in every annual plan since 2000.
SUGGESTIONS

1. There is no male SHG in the study area. The promotion of the male SHG can be suggested in the study area.

2. Family planning awareness must be given to the group members as majority of them have 4-6 members in their family.

3. Make each and every member of the group to attend the meeting regularly.

4. Motivate the group members.

5. Strict action should be taken for not attending the meeting.

6. Necessary steps should be taken to deposit the collected amount in nationalized and co-operative banks to promote rural development.

7. Steps should be taken to make all the group members to attend the self employment-training programme promptly.

8. Self-employment training programme should be suited to the surrounding environment.

9. The groups must make use of the loan amount efficiently.

10. The number of self-employment activities should be increased.

11. There should be adequate co-ordination within the group.

12. The government authorities can promote the marketing of goods at state level.

13. Self help group mainly concentrated on pickle making business. Self-Help Groups should give keen attention on other areas in order to increase the diversification of business, which may earn higher profit to them.

14. Women's development is mainly depends upon their income level. Nowadays most of the women's are join in Self-Help Groups and do their job. From the study, the produced products mainly selled in village town and district. They are not concentrated on state level marketing. It may because of non co operation from the other states or lake of finance. So the central government should give appropriate co ordination to self help group do get loan from the nationalized bank and also each and every state should co operate them selves to allow the sales of products of other state self help groups.

15. Government should arrange most members of training program and way of presenting advertisement and also the government channels can broadcast the self help group advertisement with meager amount or at free of cost. Which may help them to advertise their product easily with lower amount. The public also may know about the product through advertisement.

16. Most of the Self-Help Groups are following direct selling method to sell the products. It may because of non preference by the shop keepers. The government can give subsidies to the shop keepers and also to other purchases like shopping malls, big bazaar's etc., It may increase the sales of products.

17. Government should take necessary steps to increase the sales of self help groups. Government should assure the purchase of certain products such as Seri culture handy crafts etc., which may increase the income self help group members. The government should take necessary action to increase the number of Self-Help Groups in order to increase the women empowerment. Government should allot adequate fund to do the small scale businesses such as preparing paper cups etc.,
Self-Help Groups are created with the aim of women empowerment. It is only possible through encouraging Self-Help Groups in several small scale industries. From the above study make known that most of Self-Help Groups are involving sum self employment activities and market their products. Still they are in need of government support to improve their activities. If the governments do that defiantly their economic level can be improved.

Creating the Ultimate Self-Help Healing Session

This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.

There are times when we wish to do our healing work with a counselor or other professional, and there are times when self-help better meets our needs.
Whether you use energy work, journaling, meditation, or any other self-healing approach, there are a number of things that you can do to ensure that you achieve the most growth and healing possible, from your self-healing sessions.
1.) Choose a focus.
Begin by choosing an issue that you wish to heal.
If you struggle with identifying specific areas you want to focus upon, you may find it helpful to keep a small notebook with you. Whenever you notice a pattern, issue or concern that you would like to feel better about, quickly jot a note down to yourself so that you will remember it later.
Going through personal journals you keep - or emails you have sent to others - is another way that you can identify areas you would like to heal.
2.) Make your healing a priority.
Set aside the time - preferably regularly - where you will focus upon your healing. Write it into your schedule so that you make a commitment to setting this time aside and do not forget.
Alternatively, build self-healing work into your day: a 15 minute healing session in the morning when you first wake up, at the end of the day, or at any other time that feels right to you, can be a wonderful way to get yourself moving forward and feeling better.
3.) Give yourself the time and space you need.
One of the reasons that people often find that they get more out of healing sessions guided by a professional is simply that they focus much more deeply during those sessions. This is partially because a space is created in which outside distractions are not permitted.
Whether you choose to set aside an hour or a smaller amount of time, create a comfortable space in which to do your self-healing work. Find somewhere that you can sit or lie down comfortably. Make an effort to minimize distractions - turn the phone, television or computer off, and ensure that you have the time that you need to accomplish the personal work you would like to get done.
4.) Have everything you need, close at hand.
This may include Kleenex, a glass of water, a warm soft blanket, or pen and paper to write down thoughts or insights that come up during the process that you wish to address or make note of.
Have any healing resources that you have found to be beneficial nearby. If you have a self-help book or journal you find to be particularly helpful, you may want to refer to it. Pictures of loved ones or of peaceful scenes of times and places that you felt loved and safe, may also be beneficial.
5.) Plan to do something nurturing afterwards.
Part of healing involves experiencing greater love and compassion for oneself. You can begin to put this in motion both during and immediately after your healing session.
This is particularly important if you have chosen to focus upon healing something that feels "big" or particularly painful. In all likelihood if you stick with the process, you will feel much calmer, better, and more peaceful than you would have thought possible prior to the healing session beginning.
However, the biggest obstacle that people sometimes find with self-healing work is that if they start to feel upset, they may suddenly decide to stop the process. They suddenly find themselves distracted, or they decide the issue is "too big" to tackle alone.
If the issue is too big, seek professional support as needed. However, in most cases simply taking a moment and reassuring yourself, using any self-help skills you have found particularly helpful, and focusing upon your breathing while thinking comforting thoughts or using helpful imagery, will help you to quickly move past the current upset.
Let yourself know that if upset is encountered, you can handle it and move through it gently. Make the decision and commitment to yourself to do this, so that this moment will be the last time that this incident, issue or experience, feels so upsetting to you.
You owe yourself the greater peace that you will feel if you stay on track with the process. It can be easier to stick with a self-healing session if you are aware that you will be taking really good care of yourself afterwards - whether this is by going for a walk, calling a friend, reading a comforting book, or watching a favourite TV show or movie.
6.) Be kind to yourself.
In the absence of a supportive professional, be a support to yourself. If you booked a session with a therapist and during it she or he criticized you or gave you negative messages about your past or present difficulties - or your likelihood to heal from them - would you feel helped by that? Would you be interested in going back to do more work with them again? Not likely!
During your healing process, treat yourself the way that you would expect or want a friend, counselor, or therapist to treat you. Practice seeing yourself with compassion and understanding.
7.) If you can not - or will not - set aside specific periods of time to work on self-healing, take full advantage of any hidden moments that you do have.
Not every self-healing session needs to be done with the level of detail and care that is described above. Significant, profound healing can occur simply while going for a walk and focusing upon healing thoughts, affirmations and imagery.
Making it a habit to give yourself loving and compassionate messages on a regular basis, as you go about your day, can go a long way towards altering your overall outlook and emotional state.
8.) Know your limitations.
If it feels unsafe to you to process a particular personal issue on your own - or if you are currently feeling completely overwhelmed or unable to cope in general - it may be a greater act of self-help to make the decision to ask for assistance with your personal healing work. This help may come in the form of a trusted and supportive friend, support group, or skilled professional.
Know that there is a middle ground between going it entirely alone and being "in therapy". You can choose to do mostly self-healing if that feels right to you, and still seek professional assistance occasionally, whether this is once a month, a few times each year, or simply as a one time session.
Even those people who enjoy the benefit of regular counseling or therapy sessions will get the most value and benefit from that work, and will they further accelerate their progress and healing by working on their concerns between professionally facilitated sessions

Using Self-Talk Tactics As Self Help to Improve Positive Thinking

Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'TranslatorService.LanguageService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.

In this day and age the internet is full of resources that display techniques and methods of self help and positive thinking. What many these resources don´t mention is the tactics of self talk, this has to be a unique method when it comes to self help, and especially positive thinking. The mind is a very powerful thing and we will only ever get out of it what wee put in, or what we let others put in - so it remains vital that we use self talk to input some real positive thinking and vibes in order to maximize our self help efforts.
In general when we think of self help techniques, or positive thinking techniques the self talk tactic is very often overlooked and underestimated, and many people find it difficult to have the confidence in their own beliefs and feel they must here the encouragement from others, and this is a primary mistake. By talking things over with ourselves it helps us better know ourselves, and the situations we find our self in and therefore find easier, and better solutions. To ensure self help we have to ensure positive thinking, and to ensure this we must encourage ourselves and not wait for others to do so.
You will find that by understanding and learning the self talk method that you will soon be reaching levels of self help that before were unobtainable and that your positive thinking attitude exceeds what you were expecting - this is the reason we say that many overlook and underestimate this tactic of self help. To succeed in whatever we do one must believe in ones self, and to do this we must be thinking positive and encouraging our self - therefore self talk will become a daily part of your life, as will success.
It won´t take long for your positive thinking to help you improve with your productivity levels at work and home, you will feel more energetic, you will value yourself and your actions more - and this is what self help is all about, helping you succeed. Success breeds success and so positive thinking and self talk are two of the best self help tactics to bring you to that first hurdle of reaching success.
After you reach the first hurdle and overcome it you will find that the future hurdles become lower and easier to leap over as your new self help methods come into play and you find yourself as a natural positive thinking person. Self help is not complicated, but it is a thorough method of self help and to ensure that you gain optimal use of the technique I would encourage you to educate yourself about it a little prior to commencing the positive thinking attitude with this technique of self help.

Why the Self Help Stuff You Bought Doesn't Work - The Missing Ingredient to Self Help Results

Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'TranslatorService.LanguageService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.

You were all fired up and have bought self help books, tapes, CD's to play in your car or while you jog, whatever. You've bought them on all kinds of subjects, relating to one or usually more areas of your life that you KNOW need improvement. You're frustrated now that what you heard or read just doesn't seem to be happening for you. Nothing is changing!
When you first heard the recommendation from your best friend about that book on relationships, it sounded like such a great idea.... You actually went to the bookstore to get it. You read the cover, the back, even the inside flaps, and got jazzed up about it - "This is it!" you think, " This is what I've needed all along!" A month later, the book cover is off, the book is face down by your bed, covered in dust.
What's wrong here? Well, don't throw anything away just yet! You're just missing a vital ingredient. You're actually "this close" to using and benefiting from that self-help stuff you spent your hard earned money on.
I'm big on self-help anything, which is a bit odd, considering I was a mental health therapist; my income depended on people needing help from ME. Why in the world would I give the people I worked with anything else other than session time to get better, when coming to see me was my livelihood? Cynical people won't believe this, but most of us got into the helping professions not to make money, but to help others.
I probably did lose clients to a self-help book or video, but it didn't bother me a bit: See, I knew that life is lived OUT THERE in the real world, not the little office where people came for help. We ALL need all the help we can get in the real world!
One of the first things I did with most people is help them gain confidence and faith in helping themselves. I couldn't walk out the door with them; they had to help themselves to function and improve. Self-help information was obviously a valuable addition to therapy..
I never did think I could "do it all" for any one client, anyway, no matter what the problem was. I was just one person who knew "X" amount about whatever was wrong - anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, adjustment problems. Everyone had multiple areas in their lives affected by these troubles - daily living, family, career, financial, spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical health....One hour a week wasn't going to cut it in terms of REAL help. So I always tried to "over-deliver" and make sure they walked out the door with lots to do, including finding self help guidance and using it.
It turned out often that people wouldn't invest the TIME needed for life and self improvement. They'd come for an hour a week to talk about things, but not apply what they learned to life outside the office. They'd buy the self help books and other media I recommended, but not read or use them. Failure to do that was almost always related to TIME. The LAST thing on their to do list? Self improvement. (That amazes me; I believe we are our own greatest resource.) I know, I know, "Life" takes over and everything else becomes a priority in front of what would really make your life better.
So I made it my mission to convince clients that their lives would get better and they could leave therapy if they took the suggestions and self help steps I gave them. Guess what? The people who did that - using the suggestions - got better, left therapy and went on to happier lives!

What was their secret? Those people did something with the information I gave them and what they read or listened to -What made the difference?
The answer - The secret ingredient I am talking about - that most self help information is missing - is more astonishing than you could imagine because it is so very simple! They found a way to get started and keep that first push going. It sounds laughably simple, doesn't it? Procrastination is the number one cause of failure!
You can't succeed if you never start, right? The key to making the most of self-help information is STARTING THE ACTIONS SUGGESTED AND FINDING OUT HOW TO KEEP IT GOING.. I figured out after about a year of asking people if they did readings and steps in the self help information I gave them and getting a "No" all the time, that I better find out what was going on. These weren't willful or rebellious people. They WANTED to get better and knew they needed to take action. The answer 90% of the time was that they couldn't seem to get started and the 10 %who did get started, just couldn't keep it going.
Aha! So NOW you have the answer, the missing ingredient, and it's simple. Having the answer gets you on the path to a solution, right? The ultimate solution is to find out how to get yourself started on the self-help information you get and the best way for YOU to keep progress going once you start.
Here's a start on what to do: Ask yourself these questions:
1. Am I clear on what area I need to work on? (You think it's money, maybe, but could it be the hectic, not enjoyable family routine of constantly eating out is messing up the budget...So is it financial or family related?)
2. Am I clear on the suggestions given to work on that area of my life? Or does this author sound like they have a PhD in Economics and can't fathom how to balance a grocery budget for 4 kids?
3. Are the suggestions in the information (book, audio, video, whatever)

actually "doable" for me? (Example: I bought an exercise video which required equipment to do it that I couldn't afford at the time, and there was no hint of that on the cover!)
4. Are the people around me going to help or maybe object and not help? What do I do about that? (Accept, ignore or change their minds, is my answer!)
5. What inside me keeps me from getting started? Negative thoughts? Real physical fatigue? How can I get rid of them? What works best for me? (I recently had a roadblock due to unexpected fatigue and found natural energy drinks - fortified bottled water, basically - that were almost an instant "cure" - I was amazed!)
Another thing I found is that self-help information is often too complex and overwhelms people, so the thought of starting and committing to something that detailed was paralyzing!

OK, one more question: If you got out that exercise tape or self-help book again, could you start using it to help your life if maybe one thing in your life were different? Usually that one thing is FIXABLE. Maybe if you had more time, or you could afford the needed equipment (someone made a couple of the items for me and I found dollar store substitutes for others!), maybe if you had family support?
I challenge you that ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS GET STARTED on self-improvement and it will work for you if you work on it. You might need to reread or listen or watch the video. Perhaps you could find a different author who is not so heavy on diagnosing problems, but heavier on solutions. Maybe you need to go to an exercise class and get motivation from other people in the same boat as you.
The books and CD/DVD's you have may not work because it often isn't presented well on exactly what to do first, how to do it, and how you keep it going! Your self-help information/ program WILL work if you find out what to do FIRST and take the first step to do it. Once you start, use that momentum of accomplishment to keep moving forward. Any path is traveled one step at a time. No matter what the speed, if your steps keep moving forward, you'll get there!

Self Help Inc - Get Back Your Healthy Fury and Sadness

Unhappy? Lonely? Looking for love? Fat? Broke?
The 20,000 plus self help titles from the shelves of the bookstores didn't changed much since people are still suicidal, unfulfilled and overweight. Maybe self help literature is not food for mind but drugs for the mind, meant to make your mind drunk with inspiring yet unrealistic ideas.
Pop psychology can be described as an utopian enterprise inspired by the protest movements of the 1960s and early 1970s. Pop psychology marked a shifting direction from political activism into self-absorption. And self absorbed we become!
Philosopher John Stuart Mill said: "Ask yourself whether you are happy, and you cease to be so."

And somehow it seems true: don't you think that life used to be simple until we all started to read about how to live it?!
The last 2 decades have rained upon us a plied of self help books. Each of them promises you eternal bliss, reconnection to the healthy rhythm of the universe by unleashing the powers within (pun intended)!
The huge success of self-help is the result of combining two conflicting goals which humans wished for always to unify them in a congruent vision: financial or outward success and religious or inner transcendence - in other words, you can eat your cake and have a transcendental experience on the side too. Sounds yummy, right?!
Self help industry flourished on the background of continuous search for meanings, for ways to attain fulfillment in a society that only creates desires and continuously changing happiness paradigms.
The naked and indecent truth is that we actually need some guilt, we need anger, we need sadness and we need sometimes to stop expressing ourselves - some censorship is healthy. Sounds like blasphemy, I know - but there is always pleasure in sinning.
Self help literature had it's major success because it invited people to celebrate their weaknesses, to reclaim divine rights where only biology and psychology can do something about it.
It is essential as well for our mental health to find the right person to blame - of course that contradicts another tenet of the self help literature that preaches that we always have what we deserve.
And sometimes you may just need to shut up and listen. Must be hard as probably will be a first but stop creating unrealistic hopes repeating to yourself that everything is possible if you frame your mind in the right way and if you dive into the depths of the universe's energies. No, sometimes what you have is as good as it gets, so why not stop worrying, sit back, relax and enjoy what you already have and are?! (Hate me, yet? If not, keep reading, it's getting better).
Let's see which are the main ideas promoted by the gurus of the self help industry:
"Love should not be conditional". Wrong! Love, the most debated idea by the self help books, is not, by all means unconditional. It shouldn't be and in fact it isn't: beside your parents affection, love, trust and respect need to be gained. You are loved because you behave in a certain way, the same as you love someone because she/he is in a certain way. Becoming realistic about the important forces of life will help you more than indulging in unrealistic and utopian ideas.
"Be all that you can be" and "live up to your full potential" . Yes, true, be, but don't try to be more than you can ever be as well. Be real about your gifts, your talents and reach as high as you can to fulfill those, not some unrealistic hopes based on the premises that sky is the limit.
"Nurture and understand your inner child" correlated with "we are all victims". Wrong again

Forget your inner child - do not fall pray to the sirens call of victimhood and entitlement - we all had difficult childhoods, more or less. We all had difficulties and interruptions but those are the forces that carved our character and that is life - a cycle of crises and rewards.
Therapy had become the new religion of this society, indulging in psychological enemas with an almost pervert pleasure. Psychoanalysis is one of those tools to help you dig to no means and no ends through your memories - and bank accounts. Memory archeology is so 1980 and the therapeutic effect, if any, it is probably more due to the attention and relationships you establish with psychoanalyst than from the method itself.
"Express your anger". No, do not! For once, swallow it, internalize it and let it be the fuel for future changes. Anger is necessary, as opposed to content which doesn't drive you further unless you are an enlightened (Eckhart Tolle for sure doesn't read my blog, so...). Anger is the reality check we need from time to time. Of course, some of it need to be expressed but keep some inside and feed your inner child with it - will help him become a grown up sooner.
Perhaps the main quality of self help books is that it gives people hope - even if it is irrational, we, humans, seems to have a special appetite for irrationality - it looks like mass psychosis sometimes. We like to share madness toward the most mythical things - divinity, love, meaning, hope.
Self help literature comes to fulfill this niche of the human psyche - the need for hope, the need to elude reality and self delusion.
So you may as well give up on wearing yourself out trying to "be all that we can be" and "living up to your potential". Maybe it will help you to know that some people are natural born happy people. They just won the cortical lottery and their brain chemistry will allow them to manifest a high drive temperament and positive thoughts. Stick that on a post it on your mirror, will make you feel better if some mornings you don't feel like smiling to the universe.
One of the things that makes people so unhappy is that they think that they should and could be so much happier and fulfilled. This new found religion of self- help puts a burden on everyone - you have almost no excuse not to be happy and we are in a kind of race of who shows the most happiness and positive thinking.
The scientific truth though is that we need from time to time to slow down, that it is normal to have moments of sadness and even occasional depression. Studies showed that those who reported themselves being happy most of the time were unrealistic, self delusional, overestimating both themselves and the reality. Those that have passing moments of depression tend to be realistic, sometimes cynical, but aware of their own limits.
Not anyone can be a successful athlete - most likely your genes will set you up on this track followed by chance and personal choice. No visualization or mantra will help you make performance if your biology and environment won't help you.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't pursuit your dreams, just establish dreams appropriate for the level you are at. Having in mind all this makes it clearer to chose whether you should continue investing in your dreams or quit and find happiness in what you are right now or other more appropriate ways.
Maybe the ultimate self help advice you would need is this one: lose hope, give up, think sad thoughts, settle for second or third, don't work through your grief, don't try to discover new horizons of your personality, be pessimistic, men aren't from mars and women from venus, don't believe in yourself. Just stop fighting and be for a as many moments as you can, free of any advices, must-dos and self-victimization.
Do not register to another seminar "Fire Walking Weekend" or sign up for another success coaching sessions. If goal setting, positive thinking, daily affirmations, self talk, dream building, visualization, chanting, fire walking the self help guru's preached would actually work then we wouldn't need so many new books on this theme right? Unless...unless they are failing miserably for you.
The self help industry, success coaches and motivational experts - even though they mean well (blessed be thy) and genuinely want you to be successful - they are stunting, maybe even permanently destroying your chance to be successful. The only ones that will become successful are them, by collecting your money and attention.
Some people are even addicted to the self help books - they own tens and hundreds of them . The self-abnegating strategy the self-help industry employs: namely, tearing you down in the name of building you up has it's appeal to some people who self fulfill their prophecy of being victims: yes, victims, but not of a conspiracy but to their own self-delusional fantasy of the world.
Don't stop hoping though, don't stop dreaming, don't stop investing in the future - we need psychological self-medication every day. Just stop from time to time from your race to unknown horizons and enjoy what you are and what you have - you may have just missed another perfect day of your life!

Power Self Help: 3 Effective Techniques

Power self help is about implementing techniques that work. It is critical in this fast paced world that we have personal self help techniques that we have tried, tested and feel comfortable with.
The more we trust our self help techniques, the more we will use them both in everyday situations and during times of high stress or crisis. Habitual use helps to facilitate skill and intimacy with the methods. Intimacy does not breed contempt in this case... it helps us gain greater confidence and trust in our own inner process and helps us to develop greater self awareness, a critical factor for interacting masterfully in life.
The best, most effective techniques involve aligning the different layers of ourselves so as to maximise inner awareness. We cannot interact masterfully with others if we do not know and understand our own inner workings.
Inner alignment increases clarity, focus, effective self direction and leadership skills. These all link powerfully together to maximise manifestation of our goals and dreams consistently, joyfully and with minimum stress.
The following three effective power self help techniques can be easily incorporated into a busy lifestyle:
1. BREATHE!!!
Fast, easy way to align on the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical levels. The breath is important to connect, rebalance and remain aligned with our deepest center during our hectic, challenging days.
Breathe. Deeply and fully for several minutes, many times during the day. Breathe in peace, wisdom, love, abundance, joy and fun. Breathe out worries, anxieties, sadness, fear and hurt.
2. SELF TALK CHECK
Do a quick check of the quality of thoughts playing through the mind since awakening. Negative self talk changes the frequency we emit and attracts real life situations that support, reflect and strengthen the negativity.
If we are not happy with either the situations we are encountering during the day or the quality of our self talk we can transform both by reprogramming our self talk more positively in line with what we would like to manifest.
Having the discipline to regularly check-in on the quality of our self talk realigns it to work in partnership with achieving our goals and dreams.
The relevant power self talk technique here would be to instantly change from the negative vein to a positive, more goal and self aligned energy.
For example if the limiting self talk is "I am not good enough", an effective antidote could be "I am brilliant and easily express my brilliance in all areas of my life."
Play with this for yourself until you come up with your own personal self talk gems that you can use to instantly realign your focus everyday. Feel free to send me yours for feedback and finetuning.
3. TAKE YOUR EMOTIONAL TEMPERATURE
Tuning in to the emotional state is one of the most effective power self help techniques there is. Every one of us is a transceiver - we both transmit and receive energy frequencies. Emotion is an energy that our transceiver both emits and receives.
To truly create powerful lives our emotional and mental frequencies must match or a mixed signal will be transmitted, resulting in mixed manifestations. Relationships, finances, health, stress and other life factors will reflect the lack of alignment.
We have all experienced hearing someone say something but deep down not really accept what they said as truth simply because it didn't 'feel right'. We picked up that their emotional frequency did not match their verbal expression.
A very simple way to build awareness of our daily emotional temperature is to journal, preferably using the morning pages technique of writing three pages nonstop every morning directly upon awakening. It is important that none of what is written is read for at least one month. Reviewing the material after this period of time will reveal lots of inner concerns, desires and fears that can be addressed to strengthen inner alignment.
Emotional temperature checks, emotional release and alignment of emotions are basic power self help and leadership skill techniques I teach to clear, release, harness and direct our emotional power.
This Power Self Help article is but a brief foray into three of the most important and simplest power self help techniques that can assist us to create lives that fulfill both our inner and outer needs and desires.
As we take care of our total selves in an attentive, holistic way, the quality of our lives will improve and reflect increased balance, wholeness and effectiveness.

Do Self Help Books Help?

Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'TranslatorService.LanguageService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. What if self help books just help the self which creates your problems in the first place? I'll get back to that in a moment. First I want to say that many such books certainly can be helpful. A book on how to speak in front of a crowd can help with that, for example, and a book on how to eat or exercise better can be valuable as well.
But then there are the books that are meant to help you become a "better" person in general. These are the ones about self esteem, motivation, attitude and self image. Do these make your life better? Some are useful, but there is one glaring flaw in many of them.
The problem I am referring to is the excessive focus on the "ego" self, as though helping that grow stronger or "better" is somehow an improvement. Some books recommend affirmations, for example, which you use to convince yourself that you are strong, wealthy, or healthy, without reference to reality. But what a fragile sort of confidence you gain when it is based on this sort of posturing.
Wouldn't it be better to have the capacity to be happy and at peace even if you are weak, poor, and ill? There is certainly nothing wrong with pursuing strength, wealth and health, but being attached to these outcomes as an important part of who you are creates a lot of unnecessary stress and suffering. Yet this is what many "self help books" encourage you to do.
Do we really want to encourage our ego self? This is the self that creates an image of who we "should" be, and reminds us (painfully) when we don't live up to that image. This is the self which tells us we need to impress others, to be "great" and to rush to achieve as much as we can to prove how "important" we are. It is forever comparing us to an ideal it invents and then making us suffer for not living up to it.
Following the advice of this false self is a recipe for anxiety and mental pain. Why, then, would we want self help books which encourage us to build it up, and to embrace it even more strongly, when letting it go is what we really need? We don't need such books.
This touches on areas that are commonly called spiritual, but the label isn't necessary. Simple honest observation can show us that whatever our true self consists of, there are also parts of us that encourage chasing false values based on what this ego self insists is important. Peace of mind is certainly more valuable than any of the temporary emotional highs we can get through that sort of "self help."
When choosing and using self help books then, avoid those which plainly encourage the ego self. These include any which suggest that success is about making lots of money, being better than others, impressing people, improving your "self image" through pretenses, or in any way building up a "self" that can be torn down. Look for those which help you let go of the nonsense associated with this "created" identity, and help you act from a deeper purpose and sense of who you are.

Using Hypnosis For Self Help and Improvement

Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'TranslatorService.LanguageService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.

Many years ago I was introduced to hypnosis and hypnotherapy through a college classmate that was a professional hypnotherapist. Over the years I've used hypnosis and hypnotherapy to help myself and thousands of other people make significant positive changes in our lives.
Hypnosis isn't magic. In fact there's really nothing too mysterious about it at all. Hypnosis is a method of self help that has been used for thousands of years and by millions of people. Simply put, hypnosis is a method you can use to alter your thoughts and, as a result, your behaviors.
Hypnosis doesn't discriminate, meaning anyone can use it. Its benefits are available to anyone of any ethnic or religious background. It can be used by people of all ages and by both sexes. From stress relief to weight loss, there are self improvement hypnosis programs for you.
The great thing about using hypnosis as a self help program is that it's a do it to your self project. For many things you don't need a trained professional, but you use the same techniques that a hypnotherapist would.
Using hypnosis as a self help method can be contrary to much of our modern philosophy. Today it seems that many people want the "quick fix", so they take the latest pharmaceuticals for whatever ails them. While popping pills can be an effective short term solution, unless you have an infection, they do nothing for most of the underlying causes of stress or fitness or whatever you are trying to change. In fact, most pharmaceuticals, if taken for long periods of time, have been proven to be extremely harmful. So, unless you have a specific medical condition that necessitates you using drugs, its recommend you stay away from them.
When it comes to self improvement there are a couple of prerequisites for hypnosis or hypnotherapy to be effective. The first is you have to be open-minded that hypnosis is a useful self help treatment. Of course if you're not open minded you probably won't even try hypnosis to begin with.
The second is that you have to believe that it will work or at least suspend your disbelief that it won't work. Studies have actually found that any treatment for self improvement, hypnosis, drugs or whatever work best if you believe in them. The more you believe in the ability of hypnotherapy to help you, the higher your chances of success. If you think its all fluff then it is, and you're just wasting your time. That's because you're programming your mind for failure in advance. If there is any secret to making hypnosis work it's this - you'll get as much out of it as you believe you will.
When using hypnosis for self help, in the beginning it may help for you to have some guidance through the process. One method is using self improvement hypnosis recordings.
If you are using self improvement hypnosis recordings for stress reduction a good strategy is to try to get away from the hustle and bustle of the day so that you can get into a more relaxed state. Many people actually carry their self improvement hypnosis recordings with them as they go about their day. This way when the day does turn chaotic, they can quickly return to a calming state without anyone ever knowing they were treating themselves for stress reduction! Even a short ten or fifteen minute recording can help.
As mentioned before, you want to get rid of your distractions before listening to your self improvement hypnosis recordings because they'll just add to your stress. Finding a quiet place will allow you to focus on the techniques in the recording. Turn off your radio, your television, and especially your cell phone while you're conducting your self improvement hypnosis. Dedicate this time entirely to your well-being.
Another thing many people use self improvement hypnosis for is weight control. If you're using self improvement hypnosis recordings as part of your weight loss program a good time to use them is when you feel weakness in your resolve to exercise or eat more healthily. They are an excellent method of adding to your resolve of staying on your healthier eating and exercise schedule.
In order for your self improvement hypnosis to work, allow yourself to focus for a minimum of 15 minutes. Although many people find it hard to devote a single second to their own needs, if you want to change your thoughts, you have to work on it just as you would any other learning experience. So commit to dedicating this time to learning how to best use your self improvement hypnosis.
If you're not using a recording while you're in this relaxed state, you can give yourself suggestions about how you want to behave and then use positive visualization to "see" your life as you want it to be. For example, visualize yourself in a place so relaxing that there is no stress or if you're trying to become more fit use positive visualization to "see" yourself at the weight and in the shape you want to be.
As you start using hypnosis as a method for self help you'll find that, with practice, your subconscious mind will begin adopting those suggestions. Then, each day, as you use your self improvement hypnosis, they'll be nurtured until they grow large enough to become what's normal for you. Soon, your new behaviors will have become habits and you'll only need to call upon self improvement hypnosis for a refresher every now and then.
If you want to use start using self improvement hypnosis a good place to start is with a qualified hypnotherapist. If you are looking for one in your area shoot me an e-mail, I know some excellent practicing hypnotists around the world. It doesn't matter if you want a weight loss hypnosis program, stress reduction or a time proven method to quit smoking, a self improvement hypnosis program can quickly help you make life altering changes in your life.

Spiritual Self Help Books Are Different

Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'TranslatorService.LanguageService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.

Self-help books abound in bookstores all over the world. The first category are self-help books on a wide range of titles from how to look after your plants, build a playpen, to starting a small business. Then, in the second category, there are self-help books on how to develop a positive mindset to creating financial abundance. But the third category, spiritual self-help books stand in a class of its own.
Let me point out how these self-help books are different. I will not go into the first category of "how to books" because you can add endless titles to this category and the titles are self-explanatory. However I will highlight how the second category of self-help books differ from spiritual self-help books.
The second category
In this category, the main objective of these self-help books is to make your life easier so most of them concentrate on providing a list of things you must do in order to achieve a goal, be it stress management or staying positive. Based on the objective, these books provide advice and suggestions on how to succeed in the subjects covered.
Spiritual self-help books are different
Here the subjects, approach and depth of coverage are different. The subjects cover life and its meaning, life after death, the self, the importance of self-knowledge, how you are responsible for creating all your experiences and how you can create experiences you want. The subjects also include God and our relationship with Him.
The message that runs through these self-help books is that we are one and we affect others and everything on this planet. It calls for self-awareness, love and respect for everyone and everything.
These books reminds you that you are magnificent creators and can create and live the life of your dreams by consciously and deliberately choosing positive thoughts, words, feelings and actions. They do not just provide you with a list of "how to's" but go in depth to explain how you are creating your lives so that you will realize clearly how you are the problem and the solution. From this self-realization, you will quit feeling that life is unfair and you can start to take charge of your life knowing God has given you the powerful gift of creating your own experiences.
You graduate to spiritual self-help books
In my personal experience, I began reading the first category of self-help books in the earlier years of my personal growth. I began my working career reading books on subjects such as how to improve my memory, how to develop self-confidence, how to improve my public-speaking abilities. Then I moved on to reading books on how to achieve success, how to manage stress and how to become a millionaire.
In later years, I gravitated to reading books by spiritual gurus like Deepak Chopra who wrote on the Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, Grow Younger, Live Longer, Synchrodestiny and Life After Death. These books highlighted the interconnectedness of life and the power of your thoughts and beliefs to create your reality.

My personal growth progression is also reflected in the books I have written. My first book title was "You Are What You Believe," a book on how to program your mind for success through the use of positive affirmations for 50 different situations. Later on, my inward journey led me to write my second book, a spiritual self-help book "Know Yourself - The Truth Will Set You Free," which is a guided journey towards self-realization and the endless rewards that will follow. When you know yourself and use your creative powers to realize your dreams, your spirit will be set free and you will live life joyously. My third book which will be published sometime in 2010, is "Now Is The Time," which is a call to value the present moment and to create your future now.
